Gopher: Content > Presentation

Ars Technica has a nice retrospective of the Gopher protocol. It’s a no-nonsense information presentation mechanism that places content squarely at the forefront. No pictures-of-text or confusing and inconsistent navigation elements to slow you down: navigating one Gopher site is the same as navigating any other Gopher site.

Firefox provides native support for the Gopher protocol, and the Overbite project provides an enhanced add-on for Firefox, as well as an Adobe AIR standalone Gopher client. Old protocols die hard, I guess.

Nostalgi ....

Semantic Web Search is a search engine for the Semantic Web « AltSearchEngines

For people our Web site provides a standard search engine interface that has been extended to allow people to precisely describe the information they are trying to find. On a traditional Web search engine you might search for information about a person by using the keywords ‘John’ and ‘Smith’. This search may produce results ranging from biblical passages to iron working techniques that you must then sift through. Our site allows you to specifically search for persons (foaf:Person) that have a first name (foaf:firstName) of ‘John’ and a last name (foaf:surname) of ‘Smith’. You could then go on to perform another search to locate news articles (rss:item) that were authored by (dc:creator) that same person. We accomplish this by allowing you to describe your search using the well-defined vocabulary terms (dc:creator, foaf:Person, ...) used on the Semantic Web. Only information that exactly matches your search is returned in our results.

For computers, our site provides a web service with similar capabilities. Intelligent software agents submit precise queries to our service describing the information they need to perform a task. Our service returns to them only the information that exactly matches their request in a form that they can understand.

    Tack!

Combine Wolfram Alpha & Google Search Results in Firefox

Do you wish there was a way to combine all that Wolfram Alpha and Google goodness together when you search for something? Now you can with the Wolfram Alpha Google extension for Firefox.

Setup & Options

Once you have the extension installed you will notice a new “Status Bar Icon” in your browser. The icon acts as a quick on/off switch to enable or disable combining search results.

wolfram-01

These are the options for the extension…all focused on display properties.

Note: You will most likely want to activate the “Always show scrollbars on Wolfram Alpha frame.” option (see below for an alternative way to access the scrollbar).

Wolfram Alpha Google in Action

For our example we decided to do a search on Singapore. As you can see the search results are displaying nicely side-by-side (terrific!).

wolfram-03

Here is a close-up of the Google results…

wolfram-04

And a close-up of the Wolfram Alpha results (very nice!). Just for fun we left the Wolfram Alpha frame scrollbar deactivated to show a nice option for it…

wolfram-05

Notice the “Show scrollbar” option in the lower right corner. You can easily control when you want or need the scrollbar without it always being active.

Conclusion

If you love having extra goodness packed into your searches, then you will definitely enjoy using the Wolfram Alpha Google extension!

Convert Google Reader Items to PDFs [Google Reader]

Once Google Reader added manual controls to its new "Send To" menu, you knew some delicious URL tweaks would follow. Some already have, including a "Save as PDF" trick from the Digital Inspiration blog.

If you want to save a Reader feed item as a PDF, email a full blog post to somebody when you only see a partial item, or work more intelligently with social services, Amit Agarwal has your hook-up. Head to Settings in Reader, click the "Send To" tab, then hit "Create Custom Link" at the bottom. You'll be asked for a Send To link name, a URL with replacement codes, and an icon location. The link below has all three of those for its tweaks, including one that creatively uses the previously mentioned PDF Online converter.

We are, of course, open to your own suggestions and codes that extend Google Reader through this neat little open door. Share the links and URLs in the comments, and we'll possibly pick them up for a meatier post down the line.

Google planning to offer “cloud” eBooks through Google Editions | Librarian in Black Blog – Sarah Houghton-Jan

Google is planning to launch what it’s calling a “buy anywhere, read anywhere”digital books program called Google Editions.  The launch is scheduled for the first half of 2010.

The books can be purchased from any computing device, and then read on any other device.  This gets around one of the major problems and criticisms of the Sony eBook Reader & the Amazon Kindle — digital rights management that limits the download vs. access on different devices.  Another nice feature is that once you access a book on a device, it’s cached and therefore you can read offline as well.  Nice!

Now, if only Google could come up with an alternative to iTunes using the same access model, they would truly (and I do mean truly) rule the world of computing and digital content.

If you want to read more, Teleread and Engadget have good commentaries on Google Editions’ effect on eBooks.
